Driving home safely this Christmas
Thu, 21 Dec 2017

As the UK is set to break for the Christmas holidays, Motoring organisations are warning drivers to prepare for congestion and long delays. This weekend, delays are expected of up to four hours, as last minute shopping and visits to friends and family will be the usual two main contributors to the motoring madness.

The RAC estimates that we Brits will make over 11 million trips between now and the 25th, with around two million journeys being made on Christmas Eve alone.

The motoring organisation goes on to say that Friday is expected to be the busiest day, with over 1 million leisure journeys clashing with regular Friday traffic, as businesses close for the festive season. The most popular advice is that drivers avoid travelling on ”Frantic Friday” where possible.

The AA ran a pole that said around 40 per cent plan to take longer journeys on Friday and this alone will create hold-ups of up to four hours - fuelling the risk of further accidents and breakdowns.

Our advice to everyone making the troublesome trek is to follow the Payment Swap® Top 10 safety code:

1. Make sure you're dressed warmly or carry outdoor clothing, umbrella and footwear in the boot.

2. Keep plenty of bottled water and snacks on board

3. Make sure your vehicle has plenty of fuel in the tank / windscreen antifreeze / water topped up

4. Make sure your mobile phone has plenty of charge / charging lead to hand

5. Tell a friend or relative where you're heading and give an estimated time of arrival

6. Listen to live traffic reports* and know an alternative route in advance

7. *If enabled, set your car radio's tuning to 'RDS' (radio data system). This interrupts your current listening with another station's local traffic broadcast

8. Take note of your Sat Nav's live traffic monitoring and miss the heavily congested roads seen in red.

9. If your vehicle does not have Sat Nav with live traffic, try your mobile phone**! Most are equipped with great alternatives

10. Where possible, don't make the journey!

Everyone at Payment Swap wishes you a very safe driving Christmas and a happy motoring New Year!
